The 59th International EUROTOX 2025 Congress, held at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre, brought together hundreds of researchers and toxicology professionals from around the world, with a focus on real-life health risks and sustainability strategies. Among the participants were Prof. Massimo Caruso and Dr. Giuseppe Carota, who presented the results of two studies conducted within the framework of the REPLICA project, coordinated by CoEHAR.

The two researchers presented scientific posters in the session dedicated to “In silico and in vitro methods.” Specifically, Dr. Carota presented the poster titled: “No Evidence of E-Cigarette Aerosol-Induced Cisplatin Resistance in Head and Neck Cancer Cells“. This was a multicenter study that evaluated, through a standardized approach in four international laboratories, whether exposure to e-cigarette aerosol could induce cisplatin resistance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines. The results showed no evidence of increased resistance to chemotherapy following e-cigarette aerosol exposure, helping to clarify an issue of great oncological and clinical relevance.

With the work entitled “Building Bridges in Tobacco Harm Reduction: A Global Interlaboratory Initiative for Standardized Smoke and Aerosol Exposure Assessment,” Prof. Caruso illustrated the results of an international collaboration involving seven laboratories across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. The goal was to validate shared protocols for the toxicological assessment of e-cigarette and heated tobacco product aerosols, introducing nicotine dosimetry systems as a standardized reference. This approach demonstrated high reproducibility between laboratories, strengthening the scientific and regulatory credibility of the data.
Participation in EUROTOX provided an important opportunity to strengthen scientific relationships with leading academic and institutions. Particularly appreciated was CoEHAR’s ability to coordinate an international multicenter network, a factor that adds value to ongoing projects and opens up new prospects for collaboration.
