CoEHAR, University of Catania: 4 theses on THR

Catania, April 29, 2024 – This morning, as part of the April graduation session of the Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology at the University of Catania, four more theses on the scientific theme of smoke harm reduction were discussed.

Professor Massimo Caruso, a member of CoEHAR and a Biochemistry lecturer, served as the supervisor for four different academic works presented by the recent graduates on topics related to the ambitious research project REPLICA of CoEHAR.

Another milestone for the scientific network that has initiated collaborations from Catania with the entire world and is changing the fate of millions of people.

The theses discussed are as follows:

  • Title: “Gene expression induced by cigarette smoke and e-cigarette aerosol on aortic endothelial cells” – Thesis by: Aurora Catalano. Supervisor: Prof. Massimo Caruso. Co-Supervisor: Prof. Rosalia Emma.
  • Title: “Effects of electronic cigarette aerosol on the vitality of Squamous Cell Carcinoma cells studied by MTS assay” – Thesis by: Manuela Leotta. Supervisor: Prof. Massimo Caruso. Co-Supervisor: Dr. Konstantinos Partsinevelos.
  • Title: “Effects of electronic cigarette on squamous cell carcinoma cells treated with cisplatin evaluated by Trypan Blue exclusion test” – Thesis by: Silvia Lupo. Supervisor: Prof. Massimo Caruso. Co-Supervisor: Dr. Giuseppe Carota.
  • Title: “Evaluation of cisplatin chemosensitivity of squamous cell carcinoma epithelial cells of the tongue and effects of cigarette smoke” – Thesis by: Filippo Montalto. Supervisor: Prof. Massimo Caruso. Co-Supervisor: Prof. Rosalia Emma.
